Winter walk: Fitzrovia in the news

People on guided walk.

Mike Pentelow editor of Fitzrovia News answers questions about the neighbourhood. Find out about the stories behind the headlines on our guided walk of Fitzrovia.

Join us for a brisk winter walk around Fitzrovia from 1.30pm to 3.30pm on Saturday 14 December 2013.

Fitzrovia is undergoing rapid change with buildings being knocked down and new high-density developments going up. For Fitzrovia’s thousands of residents it creates disturbance from the demolition and building works and the rising land values are changing the character of the area with many people being priced out. New luxury apartments are being built cheek by jowl with existing social housing. But some fear that many of the luxury flats will be remain empty, land-banked by absent, overseas owners.

The ongoing story of Fitzrovia is chronicled in the pages of Fitzrovia News. The walk will take in recent sites in Fitzrovia that have featured in the local news. New residential developments, new shops and offices, and ongoing discussions about land use in Fitzrovia.

Along the way you can discover something about the area’s history, the famous and infamous people who lived here. If you are new to the area, just visiting, or want to find out more about your neighbourhood, please join us for a sociable walk.

This is a topical walk led by an editor of community newspaper Fitzrovia News. Despite the Christmas shoppers, away from Oxford Street and Tottenham Court Road, many of Fitzrovia’s streets will be quiet and its a good opportunity to explore the area.

Meet 1.30pm Saturday 14 December 2013 at Fitzrovia Neighbourhood Association, 39 Tottenham Street, London W1T 4RX (map). Entrance: Free (donation optional).
Tube: Great Portland Street, Warren Street,  Goodge Street, Tottenham Court Road, or Oxford Circus. Many buses serve the area. Several TfL cycle hire stations.
